A giant squid washed up on a beach in South Africa. Local residents were stunned by the find, Metro reports.

One of the most mysterious creatures in the ocean, which can be seen extremely rarely, washed up on the coast of Commetje, near Cape Town. Locals who came to see the amazing find note that they "couldn't believe how big it was," estimating that the beast was about 3.3 m in length.

Deep-sea monsters were never photographed alive until 2002, and for the first time they were captured on camera only in 2006. Giant squids can grow up to 13 m in length and weigh up to a ton.

Previous specimens of the giant squid collected in South Africa are kept in the collection of the Natural History Museums of Iziko.
