The famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco emits a mysterious and haunting howl, causing goosebumps in everyone who passes through it in a strong wind.
The noise sometimes becomes so loud that it begins to bother the locals. However, there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for the mysterious phenomenon.
The best theory is that the whistling sounds are caused by the railings installed in 2020 to prevent suicide. Thin slats of structures emit both low and high tones at different wind speeds.
After extensive testing using a full-scale model of the railing inside the wind tunnel, the engineers came up with a way out.
The proposed solution includes the installation of "thin U-shaped clips attached to both edges of all 12,000 vertical slats on the western railing", which "will reduce or eliminate sounds, slightly disrupting the flow of air as it passes over each bar."
The upgrade also fulfills another important function, ensuring that the structural integrity of the bridge will not be "compromised during high winds and will allow the bridge to withstand extreme sustained winds of up to 100 mph (88 m/s)."
According to officials, the modernization will cost about half a million dollars, and it will be completed by the end of 2023.
The 90-year-old one-mile-wide suspension bridge remains one of the most recognizable symbols of modern American architecture, and engineers are working hard to preserve it for years to come.
