On Saturday evening, residents of the North Island of New Zealand watched a fireball flying through the sky. Some people have also heard sonic booms. Professor James Scott from the Department of Geology at the University of Otago said he had received many reports of meteor sightings. He noted that the fireball was spotted on the top of the North Island and recorded by surveillance cameras.
According to the website Fireballs Aotearoa, the meteor fireball was located near the harbor of Kaipara and probably fell into the sea. However, preliminary analysis has shown that it is impossible to restore it.
Several witnesses shared their impressions of the observation. Mashelene Sherry said she saw a huge white ball flash in the sky, heading north. She was so scared that she almost knocked her Uber driver off the road.
Kanak and Luke reported seeing a "huge meteorite" from their home in Blockhouse Bay. They described the sighting as beautiful, lasting 10-30 seconds, with a very bright white light followed by a long yellow tail and a small explosion before disappearing.
