On Christmas day over the Swedish city of östersund appeared polar stratospheric clouds (PSO). This is an indication that the stratosphere over the Arctic circle is cold... very cold.
"Yesterday I for the first time this season I saw PSO. They hung high above the normal clouds drifting across the sky blustery winter day," said photographer Goran strand.
Normally, the stratosphere is free from clouds, and completely transparent. This is because it is very dry with large gaps between the rare water molecules. However, when the temperature drops to -85 ° C, these rare molecules start to slowly come together, forming ice crystals that develop in the polar stratospheric clouds.
It is known that some of these clouds associated with ozone depletion. Indeed, the ozone hole formed over the UK in February 2016 after the outbreak of ozone-depleting PSO type I.
In addition to Sweden, polar stratospheric clouds has also been observed in the Netherlands.
"As far as I know, this is the third case of PSO of type I that have been observed in the Netherlands over the past 35 years," said meteorologist Jacob MoE.
