Amazing, the deer like creature the size of a rabbit was photographed in the wild in the South of Vietnam for the first time in three decades. Conservationists are very excited about this event because you were worried that this rare species disappeared forever.
Silver chevrotain (lat. Tragulus vericolor), also called the Vietnam mouse-deer, was last registered more than 25 years ago, when a group of Vietnamese and Russian researchers confiscated a dead specimen from a local hunter. First species was described by scientists in 1910.
"We now know that this species still exists, and our task is to figure out how best to protect it," said the Vietnamese biologist Nguyen An, a researcher at the environmental organization Global Wildlife Conservation.
Despite the nickname, shirotani — mice, and not deer, and the world's smallest hoofed mammals. They are timid and keep one by one, their weight is typically less than 4.5 kilograms.
The details of the reopening was published on Monday, November 11, in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.
