Scientists have recorded an unusual natural phenomenon in the waters of Primorye - "red ice". This was reported at the A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center for Marine Biology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to the organization, tens of thousands of crustaceans were frozen in the years.
"They turned the ice red due to the presence of carotenoid pigments in their bodies," the report says.
The phenomenon was observed in the area of the Marine Biological Station Vostok.
Similar cases are recorded almost every year. At the same time, the ice does not necessarily turn red, scientists have also noticed brown or green colors.
