The recent powerful solar storm caused severe disturbances in the Earth's geomagnetic field, filling the night sky with spectacular auroras.
The storm reached a peak level — category G5 — on May 10 and 11 and disrupted the operation of communication equipment and even power grids in places.
Farmers in the United States and Canada have suffered special losses as a result of the devastating effects of the solar storm. Their tractors and other equipment went out of service in the middle of the agricultural season. Solar emissions disrupted the functioning of GPS and other navigation technologies, which, in turn, brought down the sowing schedule and affected fluctuations in commodity markets.
The sun has entered the active phase of its 11-year cycle, which means that similar storms are still awaiting the planet in the near future.
