On Sunday night in South Florida, temperatures are forecast to be so low that iguanas can literally fall from trees. Cold-blooded animals cannot maintain their own body temperature, and if the air temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, they become sluggish and may even appear dead.
The national weather service in Miami Tweeted that "some of our iguanas may be sleeping tomorrow morning, whether they planned it or not." This was followed by "don't be surprised if you see them falling from the trees."
According to monitoring data, the minimum temperature in Miami on Saturday was 8.3 degrees Celsius.
Ron Magill, Director of public relations at the Miami zoo, told CBS Miami that the danger to iguanas directly depends on their size — the larger the iguana, the lower the temperature the animal can tolerate for a long time.
