Ski resort is a great place to see a sun halo. These rings of light that surround the sun when in the air are trapped by ice crystals. Yuichi Takasaka captured one instance during yesterday's skiing at SilverStar Mountain resort in British Columbia.
"In the morning it was -22 °C, but we still went riding and was struck by the opened the scenery!" says Takasaki.
Conventional solar halos are formed by reflection of sunlight by the ice crystals in high Cirrus clouds. The so-called "ski halos" are formed by ice crystals that rise into the air, skiers and snow machines and hang closer to the ground.
A special type of crystals called "diamond dust" appeared on the leeward side of the slope under the influence of snow-removal equipment. These crystals have better optical properties than the natural crystals in the clouds create a very bright and clear halo.
Upon closer examination of the picture in the air you can see the glare of diamond dust. According to the skier, halo, Parghelia and colasante arc shining in the sky more than two hours.
