On Wednesday, September 2, Gadi Eidelheit from Israel witnessed a "sweet" sunset.
"The Sun disappearing below the horizon looked like a cupcake in a pink basket with green sprinkles on top," said the photographer, who took the picture a few minutes before the Sun finally disappeared.
The observed optical illusion is caused by multiple temperature inversions, in which layers of cold air are located between warm ones. The horizontal lines on the "cupcake" are the boundaries of the layers, visible due to the dust and aerosol they capture, and strong refraction.
Mirage sunsets are often topped with a green flash-the "cherry on the cake".
Gradually, the cake began to melt, at one point it resembled a yellow flying saucer, and then turned into a pink, almost triangular jelly.
"It was a magical end to the day," Eidelheit said.
