Last week, on may 30, Marybeth Kicinski of Munising (Michigan, USA) traveled to lake district national preserve "Scenic rocks" to see the Aurora. The flow of solar wind reached the Earth's magnetic field, and see flashes of the night was quite possible. However, instead of Aurora she saw the glow of the atmosphere. According to Kicinski, it looked very surreal.
Although it seems that twinkle in the sky, the Northern lights, it is not. Auroras are associated with solar wind, and the glow of the atmosphere causes a complex set of chemical reactions in the upper atmosphere. These reactions start in the daytime when the atmosphere is literally "bathed" in the strong ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. At night we see podtsvechennye, painted in green with oxygen atoms at a height of 90-100 km, and the Red color is caused by hydroxyl ions at a height of 86-87 km. Kicinski watched both colors.
The glow of the atmosphere is best observed on a moonless night away from city lights.
