Unusual funnel-shaped clouds were seen on May 16 over the county of Somerset in England. Eyewitnesses filmed elongated cloud formations and shared rare shots on social networks.
The phenomenon of cloud funnels was observed before a thunderstorm, after that there were heavy downpours in the county.
According to the UK Meteorological Office, funnel-shaped clouds are formed from drops of condensed water. This atmospheric formation is associated with a rotating wind flow at the base of the cumulus cloud. The funnel does not reach the ground or the water surface over which the cloud is moving.
A funnel-shaped cloud looks like a cone or a sharp protrusion running down from the base of the cloud. It is most often formed in thunderstorm supercells and can be a harbinger of tornadoes. But the funnel-shaped clouds themselves are only a visual phenomenon, not a wind vortex.
