Ultramedia bee blue calamintha (Osmia calaminthae), living in Florida for years and have not caught the eye of a scientist, was re-discovered by researchers in the area of ridge lake Wales in the Central part of the state.
Blue calamintha notorious shake your head back and forth, when it pollinates a flower. Then the insect collects pollen from the head and transfers it to the stomach.
Scientists were not sure that the bee still exists, because the plant, which depends on its survival, Calamintha ashei, is endangered in Florida.
Bees were registered only in four places with a total area of just 26 square kilometers in Central Florida on the lake Wales ridge.
This spring, researchers rediscovered unexplored bee.
"The bees in greater numbers than we expected, really contributes to its long-term survival," says one of the authors of the opening chase Kimmel.
March 9 Kimmel with a volunteer went to set traps for bees. Then they saw calamento, "pounding" feet on the head.
Currently blue calamintha has no protection status (neither at the state nor at the Federal level), and most of the host-plant that uses a bee, Calamintha ashei, remains under threat of extinction.
