In Patagonia in the southern part of Argentina, the water in the Corfo lagoon has acquired an unnatural bright pink color. Experts and eco-activists claim that the water is polluted with chemicals used for preserving shrimp that are exported, reports Science Alert.
According to experts, the bright color is caused by sodium sulfite, an antibacterial substance used in fish factories. Waste from one of the enterprises fell into the Chubut River, which flows into the lagoon, according to the law, waste should be treated before being discharged into the water.
Local residents complained of an unpleasant smell coming from the reservoir, as well as other environmental problems around the lagoon.
The environmental control authorities of the province of Chubut say that the unusual color of the water will not harm the ecosystem and will disappear in a few days, but residents of nearby cities protested against the discharge of pollutants into the water, blocking the road to the Korfo lagoon.
