On the night of May 30 to 31, the Earth passed through the debris of comet Schwassman—Wachman, which broke up in 1995, as the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) warned on May 27. Because of this, a stream of dozens of meteorites per second hit the planet and caused a "fiery ocean" - a relatively rare celestial picture for Russians.
Residents of different cities of Russia and Belarus shared pictures of the natural phenomenon on social networks. Similar photos came, in particular, from the Ivanovo region, St. Petersburg, Samara region and Bobruisk.
Users of social networks compared the natural phenomenon with the lights of Orodruin from John Tolkien's book "The Lord of the Rings", and also recalled the year 1815, called "the year without summer", during which a similar effect was observed from the eruption of the Indonesian volcano Tambora.
Speaking about the meteor storm that awaits earthlings on the night of May 31, Crimean astronomer Alexander Yakushechkin drew attention to the existence of several variants of the storm's start time. According to one version, it will last about two hours, and the peak will be at 6:30 Moscow time.
