Initial data
A terrifying photo of a dark figure taken in some forest has infuriated the Internet, and many assume that it is a ghost, a clown or a snowman.
Two images - one of them enlarged - were posted on Twitter. The user added the caption: "REMOVED IT'S ON A WALK, WHAT THE HELL AM I SCARED OF."
They show something like a figure crouching behind some bushes, its head and left shoulder are visible.
The second Twitter user posted a different version of the image with increased saturation to make the figure more noticeable. In this picture, there seem to be dark areas where his eyes and mouth should have been.
Many have suggested that it could be someone in clown makeup after the craze for watching clowns in 2016, when people dressed in creepy costumes hid in public to scare people.
The pictures soon attracted the attention of Bigfoot supporters and were published on the Reddit page r/Bigfoot.
The poster read:
"I don't have a firm opinion in any case, but I will say that the account of the person who posted this has absolutely nothing to do with anything strange or unusual. She clearly belongs to the type of models or "influential people on social networks.""
Others seized on the idea that since the Twitter user himself was not a bigfoot supporter, this could indeed be a true photo.
Original news
A terrifying picture of a shadowy figure snapped in some woodland has the internet in frenzy, with many suggesting it is a ghost, clown or Bigfoot.
Two images - one of them zoomed in - were posted to Twitter. The user added the caption: "TOOK THIS ON MY WALK WHAT THE F*** IS THAT IM SCARED."
They show what appears to be a figure crouched behind some shrubs with its head and left shoulder visible.
A second Twitter user posted another version of the snap with the saturation heightened to make the figure more visible. In that snap there appears to be dark regions where its eyes and mouth would be.
Many theorised that it could be someone in clown makeup following the 2016 clown sightings craze that saw people dressed in creepy costumes lurk in public to scare people.
One said: "It’s some dude in clown makeup????? Why tf he out in the woods poor bugger probably wandered off from the other clowns :( [sic]."
"Why does it look like it has painted a clown face, I would have ran back home," said a second.
The snaps soon caught the attention of Bigfoot believers and were shared to Reddit page r/Bigfoot.
The poster wrote: "I don't have a strong opinion either way, but I will say that the person's account who posted it has absolutely nothing to do with anything strange or unusual. She is an apparent model or 'social media influencer' type."
Others latched onto the idea that, because the Twitter user wasn't a Bigfoot believer themselves, this may actually be a legitimate picture.
One said: "She never mentioned Bigfoot, right? So I wouldn't call it fake. There is something or someone, we just don't know what or who. I just don't think she was faking a Bigfoot sighting."
Trying to explain the blotches on its face, another wrote: "Who is to say the BF [Bigfoot] doesn’t apply mud to the face during the summer months as a form of a primitive sunblock?"
A third didn't think it was Bigfoot at all. They said: "I would bet ghost before Bigfoot."
Hypotheses
Pareidolic illusion
A variety of visual illusions (the so-called "sensory illusions additions"); is the formation of illusory images, as a basis which are the details of the real object. Thus, the vague and obscure the visual image is perceived as something distinct and defined — for example, figures of people and animals in the clouds, the image of a man on the moon, "a hidden message", audible when you reverse the audio recordings, the shadows formed by leaves or complexes of objects in certain lighting (sometimes at a certain angle).

Deliberate falsification
This version includes any falsifications that imitate unexplained phenomena both from the outside: practical jokes, flash mobs, fake news, witness fraud, staging, etc.
There are many ways to make something similar to a ghost or a flying saucer from improvised materials, without using video and photomontage.
Many homemade things made for the sake of a joke, a practical joke or a direct imitation of a mystical being or event can be taken as unexplained not only in photos and videos, but also in reality.
