The American national space Agency has published the latest pictures of the Black sea. It turned out that the dark sea of the planet in many places has drastically changed its color from dark blue to turquoise.
The same metamorphosis happened with the Bosphorus Strait, connecting the Black sea with the Marmara. It is reported that the pictures were taken research satellite "Aqua Satellite" intended for observation of the Global ocean.
NASA writes that his companion managed to get from space is not quite the usual image of the Black sea, and in these pictures it is noticeable that in the dark blue water had a beautiful turquoise streaks, dominating usually at the shores of Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. Scientists suggest that the culprit was a powerful current that brought in the sea huge amounts of phytoplankton. Most likely, we are talking about single-celled algae coccolithophorid. They, apparently, and colored water in shades of blue and green.
A similar phenomenon is observed in the present and in the Bosphorus, separates Europe from Asia. Citizens of Istanbul were very concerned about this change. An unexpected transformation of the blue waters of the Strait in milky turquoise shades were seen by the residents of the largest Turkish city in the past weekend. Some felt that there was a leak of toxic substances. Others suggested that the color of the water changed due to the recent earthquake. Some even decided that they are dealing with something supernatural.
However, scientists say that the water in the Black sea and the Bosphorus, painted coccolithophorid, which is one of the most successful forms of life on Earth and thriving in waters from the subarctic to the equator. Haptophyceae these single-celled algae, up to 98% of the total nanoplankton yet planets play a significant role in the biogeochemistry of the oceans. They participate in the exchange of carbon between the atmosphere and hydrosphere, as an important link in the chain of ocean uptake of inorganic carbon from the air.
