Residents of Germany saw an asteroid fall at night

On the night of January 21, residents of Germany observed the fall of a small asteroid.

The celestial object fell in the eastern part of the country near the city of Leipzig. His bright flash was captured by surveillance cameras.

The first celestial body approaching the Earth was discovered by Hungarian astronomer Christian Sarnetski. According to him, the asteroid named Sar2736 did not pose a danger to humans because it was too small. Its diameter was estimated at about one meter.

The first calculations assumed that the approaching asteroid would disintegrate somewhere in the western part of Germany. At the calculated time, it entered the atmosphere and moved like a fireball at a speed of several kilometers per second. At the moment, people are looking for small fragments of an asteroid that could have fallen in the form of meteorites.

Christian Sarnetski is a legend in the field of astronomy, who discovered more than 360 asteroids. The celestial body he had noticed decades earlier even bears his name since 2017: (10258) Sarnetski.
