The Andromeda galaxy (M31) is the closest large spiral galaxy to our milky Way. It is located at a distance of 2.5 million light-years from us. The galaxy shines in the night sky of the Earth as a small, faint, elongated cloud, barely visible to the naked eye.
However, a huge halo of hot ionized gas in purple tones over the rocky terrain can be seen in this picture.
Recently, the AMIGA project used the Hubble space telescope to observe the absorption of ultraviolet light by distant quasars, and to determine the extent and composition of the Andromeda gas halo. The Andromeda scattered plasma halo, a reservoir of material for star formation, has been measured to extend about 1.3 million light-years or more from the galaxy. This is about half the distance to the milky Way and probably the Andromeda halo is in contact with the gas halo of our own galaxy.
