Another mysterious crater discovered on the Yamal Peninsula

An image of another mysterious crater on Yamal was published by the local TV channel Vesti Yamal. This was first discovered in 2014.

Researchers have suggested that such holes in the ground remain after a so — called cryogenic eruption-in other words, an ice volcano. The hypothesis belongs to geologist Andrey Bychkov and his colleagues from Moscow state University.

Some other experts are of the opinion that the crater was formed as a result of a meteorite fall or rock collapse due to the movement of gases under it.

According to Bychkov, local residents talk about recently heard a loud sound and a column of smoke, which confirms the "volcanic hypothesis". In the tundra and Arctic today you can see many round lakes, which once were also such craters, and then filled with water.
