Around the Ukrainian Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky" the snow stained bright red. Explorers found out why it happened.
All the matter in the "bloom" of microscopic algae hlamidomonada, which cells contain a red pigment layer that protects them from solar ultraviolet radiation.
The reproduction takes place by spores, which transcend extreme temperatures, and can be found in the snow cover throughout the winter. Currently in Antarctica, the summer came, the conditions became more favorable, and the spores begin to grow, becoming more noticeable against the snow. It is reported by the Ministry of education and science of Ukraine.
Scientists have also reported that this phenomenon can often be observed in the glaciers of the Alps and the Arctic.
Previously, the Brazilian researchers reported that for the first time in the history of observations of air temperature in Antarctica has exceeded 20 degrees Celsius. A record of air temperature was marked on 9 February 2020 on the island of Seymour, located in the Northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula.
