On the night of October 16, Vincent Brady of Paradise, Michigan, went in search of the Aurora, but saw something completely different.
"When I came to the place, over the Bay of Whitefish floating colorful pillars of light. What a surprise!", — said the photographer.
These columns resemble the Aurora, but really have nothing to do with space weather, caused by ice crystals in the air that intercept the artificial lights and throw them in colored vertical forms. This phenomenon is not required solar activity. The only ingredients are ice and light pollution.
Red colors come from wind turbines around the canadian Ile Parisien. Warm orange from the sodium lamps of high pressure and blue-and-white — from modern led lamps.
Such columns are often seen in Northern latitudes, especially when the cold winter air filled with ice crystals. However, as a rule, they are located not so far from surface the city lights.
