Observers around the world report that comet Virtanen (46P/Wirtanen) can now be seen with the naked eye. According to Peter Horalek from the Czech Republic, he observed her in the countryside near the town of Ustupky. Although the light was rather dim and diffused, Goralka no doubt that this is the comet Virtanen. He made this picture, which you can discern its green glow, using your camera Canon 6D.
The comet is the shining star of the 5th magnitude in the constellation Eridanus. Its faint glow is easily suppressed by the city lights, but in rural areas the comet can be seen even without special optics! And the brightness increases as it approaches the Earth. On 16 December, when the comet will approach the maximum distance, it will be 3 to 10 times brighter! At this time in the Northern hemisphere it will be visible in the constellation Taurus.
