Last night, the Aurora Borealis flashed over the Swedish city of Abisko. "It was a magnificent and unusual sight," said local guide Chad Blackley of the Lights Over Lapland tourism organization. Why unusual? See for yourself.
"I have been working here for two years and for the first time I see such a bright Aurora that even the clouds have turned green. That was amazing!" said one of the witnesses of atmospheric phenomena Bjorn Wardling. A similar pattern was observed in the Northern part of Norway.
What happened? A crack opened in the Earth's magnetic field, and the solar wind penetrating through it caused the atoms in the atmosphere to glow. The green color comes from the collision of solar particles with oxygen atoms.
Cracks in the magnetosphere often form around the equinoxes — the Russell-Mcferron effect. The autumnal equinox is only a week away, which means more green clouds are just around the corner.
