A full moon close to the autumnal equinox is called "Harvest Moon" in English-speaking countries. In ancient times, farmers relied on the light of the moon to harvest their crops in the early autumn twilight.

Juan Manuel Perez Rayego captured the "Harvest moon" in Merida, Spain, on October 1.

"The full Moon was colored orange due to dispersion in the atmosphere and very much resembled a pumpkin!", — said Rayego.

In a photo taken by photographer Sasha Lajos on September 30, the green Aurora Borealis dances in the sky of Fairbanks, Alaska, with the "harvest Moon" haloed at the bottom right and distant Mars reddening in the middle.

"The red planet and the full Moon, which joined the atmospheric flares, made me a very happy photographer. In addition, the entire trio was effectively reflected in the water," the author of the picture said.
