Drivers and pedestrians in Ferrol, Galicia, were amazed when more than 200 dead and dying starlings descended on them from the sky on November 19. There were no accidents among the bipeds, and the birds were quickly removed from the street.
Environmental experts arrived in the area and found five birds that were still alive, but could not fly. They were transferred for research to the Wild Fauna Restoration Center in Olerios.
Preliminary investigations indicate a possible cause of their death from electric shock. This can happen in birds that fly close to each other. If one individual accidentally touches a high-voltage cable with a wing, electricity can quickly be transferred to its other brethren in the group, which will lead to a mass death.
