This was not in the forecast. An interplanetary shock wave hit the Earth on September 14 at 23:13 world time. Magnetometers in Boulder, Colorado, recorded a sudden pulse of 30 nanoTesla.
This may be a previously unknown type of CME embedded in the solar wind. The impact caused a flash of auroras and a geomagnetic storm of the Kr4 class.
