In the Vologda region, a whole reservoir seems to be tired of enduring what is happening around and went underground with the fish. Only the pit remains. The "miracle" was witnessed by specialists of the local Department of Natural Resources and foresters.
Shimozero was located at the borders of two districts, Vytegorsky and Babaevsky. Being of karst origin, the reservoir was considered one of the brightest attractions of the region and occupied about 8 sq. km. Several islands were located on it.
However, the lake had disappeared before, and then reappeared in its place. For what reasons it did this, it is still not exactly known.
At the bottom of the reservoir is the so-called Black Pit, a sinkhole with a diameter of 150 m in the upper part. Beneath it is a stormy underground river. Naturally, with the flow of water, the pit also absorbs the local fauna: flocks of roach, perch and bleak descend to their local "metro" to then return with water.
For the first time, the amazing lake and its strange habits were mentioned in historical documents in 1496.
