Blooms of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is a regular occurrence in lake Okeechobee in Florida in the summer. In early July, 2018 the phytoplankton bloom was detected on 90% of the waters of the lake. This number had diminished by the middle of the month, but flowering was still possible to observe the 15 July, when the OLI instrument on the satellite НАСАLandsat 8 made this the South-Western part of the lake in natural colors.
Cyanobacteria also bloom at this time of year in the high latitudes. The second picture in the natural colors shows the bloom in Western lake Erie (the lake system of the Great lakes located in Canada and the United States) it was made with all the same OLI instrument on the NASA satellite Landsat 8. According to the analysis of the conditions of flowering NOAA, bloom on this day it was possible to observe at a distance of 24 kilometers from the coast of Michigan — it stretched East to the island of St. George.
