The Lyrida meteor shower has not yet reached its maximum, but it has already managed to scare the residents of Kiev, over which a meteorite from this meteor shower exploded.

According to the Moscow Planetarium, the Lyrida meteor shower will be active from April 14 to 25, and its peak will be on April 22-23, 2023. The International Meteor Organization predicts up to 18 meteors per hour.

The Lyrids got their name from the point in the sky from which they visually fly out - the radiant. It is located on the border of the constellations Lyra and Hercules, closer to Lyra, and is formed by comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. If the sky is clear, bright Lyrid meteors can be observed all night.

The first mention of the Lyrids was found in China in the VII century BC. US astronomers recorded observations from April 20, 1803, when up to 700 "shooting stars" could be seen per hour over the east coast of the USA.
