The mystery of the "dragon skull" found in the sand on a British beach

A strange skull that, according to some, looks like it belonged to a "dragon" has been found on a beach in the UK.

Images of the strange find were published on the Reddit page r/CasualUK, where the author explained that it was discovered on Bridlington Beach in Yorkshire.

They wrote:

"We found the skull of some animal in the sand on Bridlington Beach! Does anyone know what kind of creature it was?"

The skull looks straight out of "Game of Thrones" with two pointed eyes at the top and an elongated muzzle at the bottom. There are even protrusions where the eyes of a mythical creature should be.

In addition to the "dragon", some people in the comments section suggested that it might belong to a "wyvern", a legendary winged snake-like creature with two legs (unlike four-legged dragons).

Unfortunately for all the self-proclaimed dragon experts on Reddit, someone else was on hand with a slightly more plausible explanation.

"This is a seagull basin," he wrote. 

And also shared a blog entry on Spicebush Log by wildlife biologist Ellen Snyder, written in 2013 after she made a similar discovery.

The blog said:

"I brought home a fragment of an animal skeleton from Seapoint Beach (Ireland). At first he looked like a dragon, but that's too much George R.R. Martin for the brain.

After searching the internet for a long time, I finally found an image that matched my skeleton fragment.

Thanks to Dr. Karen Petersen from the Department of Biology at the University of Washington in Seattle for photographs of comparative vertebrate anatomy . A fragment of the skeleton from the Seepoint beach corresponds to the pelvis of a seagull shown on the website, the link to which is given above. The rounded end is the anterior end of the ilium, which in birds has fused with other pelvic bones."
