Scientists from the Mining and Metallurgical Academy in Krakow, Poland, are testing a new invention - a sonic cannon that lifts toxic smog particles high into the atmosphere, purifying the lower layers of air over populated areas, RFI reports.
Many cities in Poland face the problem of air pollution in winter when residents turn on heating systems. The new invention makes it possible to significantly reduce the concentration of harmful particles PM2.5 and PM10 in the air.
The experimental device is a large inverted cone on a metal container that emits a pop every 6 seconds. The vertical shock wave that occurs during the combustion of acetylene and air pushes the contaminated layer up several hundred meters.
Using a gun from 30 minutes to an hour reduces the level of pollution by 15-30% within 3 km, the effect lasts 1-3 hours. Scientists calculate the required frequency of explosions, as well as the duration of the procedure. One hour of gun operation costs 250-375 dollars.
According to residents of the city of Kalvaria-Zebzhidovsk, where the tests are being conducted, the sound of the device is similar to fireworks.
