Right now the Earth passes through a stream of gravelly debris from the rocky comet "3200 Phaethon", source of the annual meteor shower, the Geminids. All who are away from city lights, you can see dozens of meteors per hour. The best time for observations was the period before sunrise on Thursday, 14 December, when the constellation Gemini is high overhead.
Pete Glastonbury of Devizes in Wiltshire (UK) shared a composite of all the meteors that he saw between midnight and dawn.
"The weatherman promised clouds. I'm glad they were wrong! It was amazing, especially one with a bright fireball," said Glastonbury.
Resident Arctic Finland Bart Braafhart witnessed a meteor shower, the Geminids, when went in search of the Northern lights.
"The illuminated green glow of the sky was filled with meteors. I counted about 100. However, most of them did not hit the lens of my camera, but I managed to capture a couple of fireballs. It was wonderful, despite the cold wind, the air felt much colder than the actual temperature is -6 °C," said the author of the image.
