Every spring, very strange "creatures" appear on Dutch beaches — they walk, crawl and even fly, although they are made mainly of plastic.
These "animals", named Strandbeests, are part of the ever-growing "menagerie" of artist Theo Jansen, who has been designing large-scale kinetic creatures moving with the help of wind since 1990.
To create a "skeleton" that weighs about 180 kilograms, Jansen uses 2,000 to 3,000 meters of PVC pipes — careful adjustment of each creature takes all summer.
