On May 31, Russians will not see a powerful meteor shower from the constellation Volopas, which will reach 700 meteors per hour. This was reported to TASS on Wednesday by the head of the department of methodological support of the Moscow Planetarium, astronomer Lyudmila Koshman.
The Tau-Herculida meteor shower, generated by the collision of the Earth with the dust plumes of comet 73P/Schwassman-Wachman 3, will reach a peak of activity on May 31 at 08:15 Moscow time.
"The zenith hourly number (ZHR) of meteors is predicted at the level of 600-700, which is about 10 meteors per second. The radiant is located in the constellation Volopas. A powerful meteor storm is expected this year, but it will last only a few hours, which will not allow it to be observed from the eastern hemisphere of the Earth. The starfall is not available for observation from the territory of Russia," Koshman said.
According to the astronomer, residents of the southwestern part of Europe (the Canary Islands), western Africa, the southeastern part of North America and the northern part of South America will be able to observe the starfall.
