Purple snow was found in Kamchatka. The inspectors of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve told about the unusual phenomenon. A section of snow cover on the slope of the Railway ridge in the protected area has acquired a purple color and a strong smell of honeysuckle!
The inspectors of the reserve collected samples of purple-honeysuckle snow for research and suggested that algae caused the unusual phenomenon.
Most likely, the snowy chlamydomonas bloomed on the slope. These algae multiply on the surface of ice and snow at near-zero temperatures, and the red-pink color causes the pigment astaxanthin, which accumulate chlamydomonads during growth.
