Last winter, a giant fireball was spotted and captured on camera over the Canadian town of Edmonton. It crossed the sky at night, leaving a bright trail of more than 148 kilometers, which was noticeable for about two and a half seconds.
Experts have spent almost two years trying to figure out what they are dealing with. They were able to establish that it was a stone object that came from the Oort cloud, that is, from the most remote areas of our system.
For decades, experts have believed that there is a kind of "ice shield" at the borders of the Solar System. Now it is clear that he is not only made of ice.
Astronomers have never been able to examine the Oort cloud in detail before. They only knew that cosmic bodies sometimes arrive from there to Earth, which then flare up and completely collapse in the atmospheric layers. An extended tail is formed behind them due to evaporation of moisture during entry into the lower layers.
According to experts, the space object spotted over Edmonton weighed about two kilograms, and in diameter reached 10 cm.
