Scientists have discovered mysterious octagonal "stamps" at the bottom of the Fram Strait. Research using remotely controlled devices revealed that mysterious prints were left by Dumbo octopuses when feeding.
These creatures live in deep-sea zones in all terrestrial oceans, but they still remain poorly studied. Their diet consists mainly of worms and crustaceans, and the feeding strategy is similar to that of holothurians.
As it turned out, octopuses "stamp" octagonal images on the muddy seabed to avoid the threat from predators and save energy by using passive movement with ocean currents. This is an example of how deep-sea fauna embodies convergent evolution, including contributing to the transfer of carbon in the vertical direction in the water column.
