Like the pool, hit the water, the celestial object is slowing rapidly, penetrating into the denser portions of the atmosphere. The densest part of the atmosphere is below 12 km from the Earth's surface.
In contact with air, the meteor is rapidly losing mass. The outer layer of a celestial body is continuously evaporates due to the high-speed collision with air molecules. The particle size to a few kilograms usually disappear completely in the atmosphere before they reach earth.
