We are used to seeing green auroras. But during the equinox, they can be pink!
Pink color appears when charged particles penetrate the Earth's atmosphere deeper than usual. The green glow occurs when electrons interact with oxygen molecules in a layer from 100 to 200 km.
But when the electrons penetrate deeper, the auroras turn pink. This happened on the night of September 26-27 in Norway.
