According to the National Antarctic Research Center, the snow on the territory of Antarctica has changed color from white to crimson and even green. As it turned out, changes are fraught with danger.
The change in color is associated with microscopic algae that actively reproduce. For greening, the pigment chlorophyll is responsible, and redness – the cells of some algae that make up the carotene layer. This layer prevents the harmful effects of ultraviolet light.
According to experts, the color of snow affects climate change. The sunlight is starting to show less and, as a result, the melting is faster. The growth of algae only accelerates with increasing temperature.
British scientists from the University of Cambridge plan to study the phenomenon more thoroughly. They also want to find out how large the scale of snowmelt in Antarctica is.
