On the night and morning of December 10, The earth will experience the strongest geomagnetic storm in 2020, according to NOAA analysts.
The storm was caused by a solar flare that occurred on December 7. High-speed solar wind has already reached the Earth, but the maximum disturbances are expected in the morning on Thursday, December 10 (Moscow time). According to the NOAA forecast, the storm may reach class G3 (maximum-G5).
The most spectacular phenomenon that this flash can cause is the Aurora, that is, iridescent lights in the planet's atmosphere.
Auroras mainly illuminate The earth's poles, but this time they can light up in the sky and over the middle latitudes.
If you manage to capture this amazing phenomenon, send photos and videos to the mail news@gismeteo.ru -the best ones will be published.
Other possible consequences of a strong flash are less pleasant — radio outages and interference in navigation devices.
In 1967, a powerful outbreak almost caused a nuclear war. All three U.S. air force ballistic missile early warning systems in The Northern hemisphere, located in Alaska, Greenland, and the United Kingdom, seemed to be stuck. Air force officials suggested that the Soviet Union was responsible for the failure, and the US air force began hastily preparing aircraft to launch nuclear weapons. Fortunately, military forecasters intervened in time, informing senior management that nothing less than a powerful solar storm was detected on the radar.
And the strongest storm documented even has a name-the Carrington event. It happened 99 years ago — in 1921. The consequences were colossal-massive power outages in many countries and even fires caused by strong heating of telephone and Telegraph lines due to induced currents.
Powerful geomagnetic storms have occurred on Earth at all times — their consequences are reflected even in ancient drawings, for example, in this Japanese sketch from 1770, the brightest auroras are shown
