Residents of the UK and neighboring islands saw the Northern lights twice a week. This is reported by The Conversation.
The aurora borealis is the luminescence of the upper layers of the atmosphere under the action of charged particles of the solar wind. It is mainly observed in the far north and south near the poles, but in rare cases it is visible from temperate latitudes.
This week, residents of the UK twice reported this unusual phenomenon and took a lot of photos. The first case occurred on the night from Sunday to Monday, the second – from Monday to Tuesday. These auroras were caused by two coronal mass ejections of the Sun on February 24 and 25. However, since the speed of movement of charged particles is much less than the speed of light (3 million km / h), they reached the Earth only after two days.
In rare cases, the northern lights can be seen in the vicinity of Moscow, but it is impossible to predict this in advance.
