A bright fireball was spotted over the Mediterranean Sea on November 7 at 22:52 GMT. Presumably, this is a meteor belonging to the Northern Taurids - a branch of the annual meteor shower observed from September to December inclusive, reports The Watchers.
The radiant of the meteor shower is located in the constellation of Taurus. The Taurids are plumes of meteor particles that once stood out from the comet Encke. The orbit of the stream has changed over time so that it currently crosses the Earth's orbit.
The meteor hit the atmosphere at a speed of about 111 thousand km/h. The fireball became visible at an altitude of about 101 km and disappeared at an altitude of about 60 km.
The event was recorded by the stations of the SMART project, managed by the Meteor Network of Southwestern Europe (SWEMN).
Every year, more than 6 thousand meteors fall on the Earth, large enough for their parts to reach the earth. This means that about 17 meteors enter the atmosphere every day. Meteor flares attract attention several times a year because they occur in the sky over densely populated areas in the evening and at night.
