The storm is an atmospheric phenomenon in which the inside of clouds or between the cloud and the earth's surface arise electrical discharges - lightning accompanied by thunder. It is quite a common natural phenomenon in certain situations could be considered something abnormal, such as when it appears under unusual conditions or unfamiliar to the eyewitness. A vivid example is the so-called "snow storm" (or "snow storm"), i.e. thunderstorm, which is when rain falls heavy snow, freezing rain or ice pellets. The phenomenon is observed in the cold season on the banks of the unfrozen seas and large lakes.
So, for example, summer lightning - a frequent phenomenon observed in the dark mostly in August, but the summer lightning of the thunder is not heard because of the range, and can be seen only flashes of lightning, the light which is reflected from a cumulonimbus cloud (mainly the peaks).
Most often lightning occurs in cumulonimbus clouds, then they are called lightning; sometimes lightning is formed in a layered-rain clouds, and during volcanic eruptions, tornadoes and dust storms.
Lightning can form and above. So, in 1989, was discovered a special kind of lightning in the upper atmosphere – elves, in 1989, sprites, and in 1995 the jets.
