Mysterious crop circles were ancient citadels

Polish archaeologists have conducted aerial photography and magnetic measurements in the South-East of the Wielkopolska Voivodeship and found ten previously unknown citadels, built in the period from the iron age to the middle ages.

As reported Nauka w Polsce, the archaeologists were extremely surprised that showed an aerial view. It was held in the region, which was considered to be thoroughly studied. Previously, there was discovered nearly a hundred different castles.

However, the new study showed that at least ten citadels are hidden under the ground. Only the use of new technology helped to detect them. From the air they are seen as regular geometric shapes, mostly circles.

“Several of these structures have been mentioned in the pre-war literature, but at that time they were badly damaged, says the project leader, archaeologist Maxim Matskevich. – We finally lost the information about their location”.

Over the past decade, many other fortresses razed to the ground. Now they are very difficult to distinguish in the landscape. The reason for the disappearance of citadels archaeologists believe the conduct of agricultural operations. Archaeologists talked with old-timers. Found that those remember the days when the now vanished walls were still quite high.

The researchers visited these places and found a lot of pottery, Dating from the early iron age to the late middle ages. One of the unknown citadels is located in the district Gruzelier.

“Already the first field observations confirmed that there is a ruined fortress – on the plowed land, we found traces of burnt wood and burnt clay, says Mackiewicz. We also found numerous fragments of early medieval pottery. The scheme of fortifications was well visualized in magnetic research.”

Another citadel is Nausicaa. Until now it was believed that there existed one settlement. But the aerial photos show that were adjacent two of the citadel. One was round and the other rectangular. Both these figures clearly printed on an agricultural field and visible from a great height.

Archaeologists plan to continue observations from the air. They suggest that the land in this region, there are still hidden citadel.
