Jupiter and Saturn are coming closer — the great conjunction of the planets will take place very soon. At their closest approach on December 21, they will be just a tenth of a degree apart — so close that some may see them as one star.

According to Hazzari Ali Ahmad from Kampong Keriam in Brunei, he took this picture on December 9, when the two planets were clearly visible above the Western horizon at sunset.

The conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn occurs every 20 years, but it is usually difficult to see because it occurs close to the Sun. But this year everything is different — the giant planets are approaching in the evening twilight. The last time they were so close and easily visible was in 1226, so this connection is really a rare event. Periods of particular interest during the great conjunction of 2020 are December 16-17, when the lunar Crescent will "visit" the beautiful pair, and December 21, when Saturn will be as close to Jupiter as some of its moons.
