The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) has confirmed significant changes in volcanic activity, which began on May 2 at about 1:00 local time. New cracks formed on the volcano from time to time.
The eruption occurred around 2 a.m., the giant fountain was far visible in the dark. The powerful lava eruption lasted up to 10 minutes.
Esperts suggest that there were changes in the flow and chemical composition of magma and gas, the supply of magma was redistributed and it broke out in a violent flow.
The size of the danger zone at the eruption sites is being reassessed.
The Krisuvik-Trelladinja volcanic system is a cluster of cracks about 50 km long, including 30 km of cracks without a central volcano. This is just one of the volcanic systems located in a chain along the Reykjavik Peninsula.
