Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, also known as the "cold volcano", is rapidly approaching the Earth and preparing a unique celestial spectacle. According to forecasts, in 2024 the celestial body will be at the minimum distance from our planet.
This astronomical event attracted the attention of scientists and other astronomy fans after the comet became significantly brighter at the end of last month. Astronomers have found out that a sharp outburst of dust caused its sudden brilliance.
What makes this comet so unique and interesting? Its alternative name – "cold volcano" - speaks for itself. Instead of incandescent lava, as in ordinary volcanoes, this comet emits a so-called "cryomagma" consisting of water, ammonia and methane. This phenomenon allows us to look at the processes taking place on celestial bodies from a completely different side.
Even now, observers can observe this bright object using telescopes. However, a real holiday for astronomy lovers will come in April 2024, when the celestial body will be visible even to the naked eye. Through the misty expanses of heaven, comet 12P/Pons-Brooks can be seen in the southern hemisphere.
The most anticipated moment of this astronomical theater is expected in June 2024, when the comet will fly at a minimum distance from the Earth. Despite the fact that it will be less bright, during this period the celestial spectacle will be available for observation in many parts of the Southern hemisphere.
