When photographer Barbara Martens photographed Upper New York Bay in the early hours of February 24, she couldn't believe her eyes, despite her extensive shooting experience.
Martens decided that her camera was broken — the moon was setting behind the Statue of Liberty, but suddenly its shape became very unusual.
Martens ' hobby is photographing the Moon over landmarks in the New York City area. Although she had no idea what she was seeing, she still continued to pull the trigger.
In fact, there was nothing wrong with the camera — the lunar disk was distorted. Temperature inversions in the air created a multi-layered mirage, making the moon's disk look stretched and cut. The upper edge of the night star also has a barely visible green edge — this is considered a classic sign of prismatic refraction in the low layers of the atmosphere.
